*The camera turns on and we find ourselves in a lush, green park. A bench sits in front of an idyllic pond with ducks, geese, swan, and assorted water fowl all swimming together without incident. After a few seconds, Jean Carter walks into frame and sits down. She's wearing a red "EMERGE" t-shirt, khaki-colored capris, and an even bigger smile. After taking a deep breath, she smiles and puts her arms out on the bench in a relaxed gesture.*
[Jean:] "This is better, right? A little sunshine for a change? Look, I get that a solemn occasion called for a professional location. But it felt like we watched Arthur and then Ruby sit in that office chair for like a month! I mean, it's beautiful outside and we could all use the fresh air after what we went through.
But let's get this out of the way: I'm not going anywhere. Coach Jean Carter reporting for continued duty! Even if I wanted to leave, Celes wouldn't let me. She insisted I wasn't at fault for any of it. K*I*D wasn't on our roster so I sure as heck wasn't expecting him to burgle my gem. And more importantly, the gem wasn't the problem anyway, right?"
*Jean doesn't appear fully convinced that this was a true rhetorical question but continues.*
[Jean:] "Look, the truth is that I feel more motivated than ever to be the best Coach I can be. Maybe it's the freedom from captivity but I feel truly energized to do with OG-Joshi what I've wanted to for years now. It's obvious we got off to a bit of a slow and bumpy re-start over the past few years. And it's not like things are perfect now either. But Celes is back. Figgy is back. Clyde isn't going mountain climbing again anytime soon. So I actually feel like OG-Joshi is more protected now than it's been in years. And that means we can move forward even more confidently.
And that's what I'm here to talk about today, moving forward.
The problem is, we can't exactly 'spring' forward now can we, since we're so close to 'falling back.'"
*Jean laughs at the seasonal pun then continues*
[Jean:] "I like the word 'folly' and I think it applies here. It would be folly to run an event called 'Spring Fling' in September. Sheer, unbridled lunacy even. It may even be illegal!
The matches aren't changing, of course. The card still looks like a dream to me - especially since I know who Kathy and Robin are choosing to face each other. But the name has to change. "Fall Fling" just falls short of OG-Joshi standards.
So I did some brainstorming with Luke and we came up with two ideas. You can choose which one you like.
We're still in the 'After School Fun Special' tour, right? So it probably makes the most sense to call this event 'Back to School.' You may even say it's self-explanatory but I don't know why I need to explain it to myself if I already know it. Again, these are all great questions to ask your teachers, kids!
I think people may just prefer that name for simplicity sake. And it sounds kinda cool, you know?
*Jean stands up, puffs out her chest, and uses a fake deep voice.*
[Jean:] "I'm takin you nogoodnick back to school!"
*Jean laughs and sits back on the bench.*
[Jean:] "A little strong language is okay every now and then, right?
Okay, so now we get to the second name for the show. Once again, we gotta turn to the seasons. It's almost Fall so I was thinking something with an 'equinox' theme. Then I realize - wow, Jean, the word just smacks of horses! So I kind of spun the ideas around in my head like a dryer and came up with..."
*Jean places her hands up over her head like a Hollywood marquee sign in lights then laughs at herself.*
[Jean:] "We're gonna call it "Equine-nox: The Horses of Autumn!" Do you like it or do you lump it? Sugar lump, that is, for all those horses. See, Luke has a new friend named Gleonardo. He's a horse-washer and approves of this name. If we're going to discuss horses, it seems really important to me that a professional sanctions it.
But everyone can feel free to call the event by either name. I won't even hint at which one I prefer."
*Jean does a poor job of trying to hide a smile.*
[Jean:] "What's most important is what this show represents - not just a return to normalcy, but a huge trot forward into the future. Fittingly, we're going to follow it up with an After School Fun Special event for the second round of the EMERGE Showcase tournament. Then we're going to wrap up the entire tour at the OG-FPD 21st Anniversary event!
After that, a whole new year awaits. Barton was right at Summer School: it's important to look to the past to see what direction the future's headed. If you take a looksee at the calendar, you'll notice a special occasion coming up. OG-Joshi started in 2005, after all. And I got ideas, I got dreams, and I got hopes for how to make it's 20th anniversary special.
It deserves it and so do we all."
*Jean smiles and the camera fades to white.*
