The scene opens to Jean Carter's office, lights off, with a scant amount of sunlight trickling in from the window through blinds and curtains. Jean slumps behind her desk, embedded - but likely not relaxed - in her not-inexpensive Italian leather office chair, head down, bathed in the absence of light.
A knock at the door. No movement from Jean.
Another knock, louder, heavier. Still, Jean doesn't stir.
Banging at the door now, accompanied by
[Visper:] Jean, it's me. Open the door, goddamnit.
Jean looks up, waits a moment, and says
[Jean:] It's uh, unlocked.
The door handle clicks,
[Visper:] Oh.
And the door swings open. Visper steps in, looks around at the lack of light, and flicks the light switch. Florescent light floods in the room. Jean winces and hides her eyes. Visper walks to sit in the guest chair, shutting the door behind her.
[Visper:] Have you been like this all day? Or is this just a post-lunch nap?
Jean looks up, puzzled.
[Jean:] Post... lunch? Wait, what time is it?
[Visper:] It's 2:30. Seriously?
[Jean:] Does the time even matter if I have no idea what I should be doing? Visper, I'm so confused and upset and disappointed... Things were going so well around here, and--
[Visper:] And they still are, Jean. This hiccup isn't so devastating that it causes you to lose hope.
[Jean:] Hiccup?
Jean sits up and slams a hand on her desk before standing up, leaving her office chair spinning, pacing behind her desk.
[Jean:] Asako's little promo last week was a hiccup. Visper, Ruby Moreno is holding the OG-Joshi World Championship hostage! I won't let the Title, I won't let our entire company be dishonored in this way! But to fire Rose would go against everything I stand for. Meanwhile, you're probably mad at me for not catching on to Ruby's... shenanigans!!
*Jean stops and suddenly blushes*
[Jean:] Sorry! I shouldn't use such strong language.
[Visper:] I'm not mad at you.
[Jean:] How can you not be?! Because of my... stupidity, you lost the OG-Joshi World Championship! And I'm sorry, Visper, I'm so sorry it happened. But what am I going to do?
[Visper:] Well, I think the first thing - the best thing - you should do is calm down. Look, I'm not mad at you, and I certainly don't blame you for me losing the World Championship. Hell, it's my fault. If I had won, we wouldn't be in this position in the first place.
[Jean:] But she stooped to such a low level. She should have tried to earn her shot. She wasn't even on the roster!
[Visper:] I don't disagree. But what's done is done, and she did defeat me. I own up to that, and I won't demand a rematch, and I won't dispute her victory.
[Jean:] You're not even angry?
[Visper:] I'm upset, but, what good would anger do? Anger clouds judgment and reasoning, and those are two vital things to retain in this kind of crisis.
[Jean:] Visper, I...
Jean slumps her shoulders and looks down.
[Jean:] I cannot believe how calm you are. I'm worried to the point where, well, you saw me. Just sitting here in the dark. There were so many signs, and I didn't pay attention to a single one of them! Kat not talking to me before her match, acting weird backstage... why didn't I start questioning things when she started doing all those chops?!?
[Visper:] Jean, Jean, listen. These are the kind of situations that Celes trained you for; tried to prepare you for. It's just a sad truth that, no matter how much we achieve in trying to purify OG-Joshi, we'll never get it all the way clean. 99%, on our best days.
[Jean:] And so, what does that mean?
Visper stands, walking around behind the guest chair as she talks, gesturing as she talks.
[Visper:] That Ruby Moreno is here to fill a void left by Holly. And when Ruby is gone, someone else will take her place. It's nothing we can stop; we can only try out best to prevent it.
[Jean:] But I couldn't this time! So now what? Should I give in? Should I just let her just get away with this?
[Visper:] What, are you asking for my permission to roll over to a terrorist's demands? You're not going to get it.
[Jean:] Then what do you think I should do?
[Visper:] Endure, Jean. You have to. You are in control, not that petulant child Ruby Moreno. But be careful as you deal with her.
[Jean:] Careful how?
[Visper:] There's a saying; "Either you die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."
[Jean:] So if I waiver from my convictions, I'll end up like her?
[Visper:] Exactly. You cannot let Ruby bring you down to her level. You must not let that happen, or everything that you and Celes, and the good girls here in OG-Joshi have been working for here will be lost.
*Jean takes a few seconds to take this in and then calmly nods*
[Jean:] I think I understand now.
Jean moves to her desk, and sits down in her chair, sitting up straight with far more confidence than before. Visper follows her lead and sits in the guest chair.
[Jean:] Visper, thank you. The cobwebs have cleared out, and, I think I have the start of a plan.
[Visper:] Any time.
[Jean:] I hate to be rude, but, I have a lot to do now and I don't want to lose any more time. Ever since Voltage I just sat in this room feeling sorry for myself but now it's time to fight back. Now I'm ready to do what I had been dreading all week.
Jean picks up the phone as Visper walks toward the door.
[Visper:] Glad to help, "Mean" Jean.
As Visper leaves the office, Jean smiles and nods at her. Then she takes in and lets out a deep breath before pushing a few buttons on her phone. The scene fades right after we hear "I'm ready to negotiate some terms."
