History/Personality:
Canadian-born, Mexican-trained, USA-honed, world-reknowned Teresa Tanaka was a fan of wrestling from her earliest days growing up in the dusty mining community of Dawson, Yukon. A natural athlete her whole life, Teresa became hooked on pro-wrestling at the age of 9 and made her professional debut at the age of 16, just 2 days after graduating from high school! The consumate high-flyer, Teresa honed her craft in Mexico where she fell under the tutelage of several high-profile lucha stars, most prominently of which were Psicosis, Sarah Stock, and her distant Cousin, the Ultimo Dragon.
After making a quick name for herself as the masked luchador "Girl Dynamite," Tanaka ventured north into California at the age of 18. It is here that she tasted ger greatest early success, winning the Golden Gate Championship Wrestling Women's Title Tournament and later capturing the GGCW cruiserweight champiosnhip, becoming the first woman to do so. It was while defending this last match that Teresa would first encounter her greatest rival, toughest opponent, and eventual best friend: fellow Canadian Xouxou Chen.
In a nod to the lucha libre which she was revolutionizing, Tanaka accepted Chen's challenge in a "Mascara contra Caballera" (Mask vs Hair) match. Although Tanaka initially dominated the match with her superior size and speed, Chen was able to secure the victory via the Dragon Sleeper. Humbled and humiliated, Tanaka hastily threw down her Girl Dynamite mask and retreated from the ring. As she was quietly lamenting in the locker room, none other than Chen herself came by to thank Tanaka for what she described as "the greatest match of her career." Touched by these words, Tanaka vowed to achieve new heights in their next encounter, a vow which was readily reciprocated by Chen. They did not disappoint.
6 months after her loss to Chen, Teresa challenged Xouxou to a rematch in a falls-count anywhere match. In a match that was less technical and outright brutal, Tanaka gained the victory and the belt by pinning an unconscious Chen (who was knocked out by a nasty top rope hurricarana which threw her out of the ring and into a table). Though happy for her victory, Teresa was surprised at her concern for Chen's well being. Defying traditional convention (something of a habit for her) Teresa voluntarily escorted Chen to the nearest hospital where everything checked out fine. Although very sore and still somewhat groggy, Chen vowed to raise the level of competition yet again to which Tanaka readily reciprocated.
Just one month after their last encounter, Tanaka faced Chen in a 60 minute Iron-woman match. In a match for the ages, each woman was able to record both a submission and a pinfall, but ultimately failed to obtain the deciding fall, thus ending the match in a draw and a title retention for Tanaka. Despite the wounds of war (including a broken nose for Teresa from one of Xouxou's kicks), Chen humbly and graciously held up Tanaka's arm in victory to which Tanaka replied with a firm hug, thus concluding their feud and beginning a partnership that would see them travel the world together winning numerous singles and tag titles apiece.
Through all of her wars and all of her successes and failures, one thing that has stood out about Teresa over the years is that she genuinely loves what she does. Her passion for the ring is paled by nobody and matched by very few. While she may come across as brash and downright arrogant in promos, she truthfully holds a good level of respect for each of her opponents. Despite this mouthiness, her greatest medium for communication is expressed inside the ropes and on the turnbuckles. In this respect, nobody is louder, more eager, or as consistently entertaining as Teresa Tanaka.
