Scene opens at a table in an airport coffee shop - while purported Queen of Pro Wrestling Kaori NiGHT sits at a table, sipping her coffee (Venti Irish _Mocha, double shot, non-dairy creamer) while she flips through a Japanese-language newspaper... her tag partner Jenny McLanahan sitting at the table, she fidgets with a pen, clicking it repeatedly, rapidly, spinning it about in her thumb and forefinger before she pauses long enough to click it a few dozen more times, her hands shaking a bit...
[Kaori:] Jennifer, clicking the pen ruins my coffee. We've talked about this.
[Jenny:] I-it doesn't... y-you-you j-j-just say it does.
[Kaori:] Oh...? This is interesting - you seem to have something on your mind.
[Jenny:] Y-yeah.
[Kaori:] Well, out with it, then! Don't keep me from my Sudoku too long.
Kaori folds the newspaper up neatly, setting it upon the table, and looking directly into Jenny's eyes - she turns her head away, avoiding her gaze, and mumbling a bit, before swallowing and continuing.
[Jenny:] You don't treat me like much of a partner.
[Kaori:] ...and?
[Jenny:] And, I... I know that you and I didn't team up very much, but when you were at the McLanahan Gym and asked me to team with you in OG-Joshi, I was happy! I still am! Your regular partner decided she'd rather publish trashy fantasy-slash-romance porno novels than wrestle, and for a replacement, you picked me. When I think about that day, I can remember everything so clearly, so perfectly, every word you said - "I want you, Jenny," you said, "I want you to be my partner, my equal."
...but all you've done is treat me like a fourth-rate personal assistant.
Jenny looks up, and - emboldened - she takes Kaori's hand.
[Kaori:] Nani? [What?]
Jenny looks up into Kaori's eyes, her own shrink-wrapped in tears; as she keeps talking, her words becoming more full as she becomes more confidant...
[Jenny:] Where's the partnership? Where's the equality? I don't want to be beneath you - I want to be BY you - I want to support you, but I can't do it from where I am. I can't be your strength and support if I'm nothing more than your luggage carrier, your coffee fetcher, your hotel and rental car arrangery person girl.
[Kaori:] But-
[Jenny:] Please, let me talk... all I want to do is wrestle, and in this Evolution.R tournament, I have a chance to do it on the biggest stage of professional wrestling, but I can't do it without someone believing in me, because I sure as hell don't. Please, Kaori... just... just believe that I can do a little more than be your maidservant.
[Kaori:] ...
[Jenny:] ...okay. I'm done.
[Kaori:] What happened to you? You used to be amazing - a perfect blend of pure, raw "@#%$ you" attitude, with the talent to back it up. That's why I wanted you. But, you've lost that attitude, and while you've got the talent, it's less about what you can do, and more about... More about instilling your soul into every movement - making every movement, every action matter. You seem to have lost the knowledge of how to do that. And until you get it back, Jennifer McLanahan, you won't be any more useful than acting as my personal assistant's personal assistant.
I'm not saying this to be mean. It sounds like it, even to me: but you aren't any good to me like this. I want this partnership to work out, but, it's only an "equal" partnership if everyone involved is carrying their load. And while you're doing okay in the ring, you're struggling everywhere else. Equal partners, equal shares, right?
You said that you don't believe in yourself, Jenny. Well, if you don't believe in you, how can you expect me to?
Kaori pauses for a moment.
[Kaori:] Jenny, look. You're not useless. You aren't crap - you deserve everything you earn. You know what you're missing - and you know that finding it will make you worth it. But until you find it?
Kaori shrugs.
[Kaori:] You're about as useful to me as a dead microphone.
Jenny looks down at the table, her hair falling in her face... her shoulders hitch, tears splashing the table top as Kaori takes her newspaper, and Jenny's pen, and opens the paper up again, as the scene fades to black.
[Kaori:] Jennifer, clicking the pen ruins my coffee. We've talked about this.
