SPOILER ALERT: Read this AFTER seeing the match between Yoshi Hattori and Lydia Genevieve at O's TV Episode 25!
OG-Joshi mental health assessment project.
Patient 1: Yoshi Hattori
Overview:
Yoshi Hattori is the first patient assigned to me by OG-Joshi Coach, Jean Carter. I am thankful that Yoshi is a friendly and upbeat individual, especially in relation to some of the other members on the roster I have begun to survey. However, she is also going through a tough time in her career as her manager, a Miss Asako Matsuki, has become increasingly verbally abusive. And her other charge, Narai Kaeo, has gotten to the point approaching physical abuse of Yoshi. So Coach was understandably concerned that Yoshi was becoming depressed and referred her to me. I am hoping to analyze how Yoshi's body language in the ring reflects any sign of dangerous inner turmoil.
Match 1
Unlike my colleague, Dr. Holt, I do sometimes approach my prospective patients ahead of time with my plans to wrestle them. I determine whether to do this on a case by case basis. However, with Yoshi, I did not tell her beforehand. My primary concern was her repressing her emotions about how her manager is treating her as well as the likelihood that Miss Matsuki herself would try to stop me from having a session with her contracted talent. That fear was justified given the fact that Miss Matsuki almost barred me from conducting the post match interview with Yoshi. Thankfully Coach stepped in on my behalf and made it clear that every wrestler's contract had mandatory sessions if they were recommended. I may try to get that extended to managers as well.
The match with Yoshi itself was high spirited and a little difficult for me being up against one of the quickest and perhaps most agile wrestler on the roster. Furthermore, her ability to contort her limbs due to her "Elimininja" 1 training also made it very difficult for me to properly utilize my submissions. She found a way to arch and angle her body to minimize the torque. Finally, Miss Hattori possesses one of the most impressive and awe-inspiring finishers I've ever seen and frankly I was more then just a little dizzy after the match. As annoyed as I was with Matsuki trying to interfere, I actually benefited from the delay between match and consultation.
Of course, for my purposes, more important then Yoshi's physical abilities was her mental state in the match. Unfortunately I was at an impasse due to her behavior that could be interpreted in different ways. Yoshi was holding back as the match went on, passing up on numerous occasions to finish the match. I do not feel that I had ever achieved a dominant position and yet she was content sparring with me up until the end. I was unable to determine if her tentativeness was due to her humility and kind nature in wanting to give me a fighting chance, or due to some subconscious lack of confidence or anxiety due to her position with her manager.
When she finally did unleash her "YOU ARE ELIMINATED" finishing maneuver, it was performed with great confidence. That tells me that when Yoshi is finally ready to make a big decision in a tough situation, she fully commits to it. I found that very reassuring. But I am concerned that it took her so long to get to that point. Up against a stronger or more dangerous opponent then myself in the ring, her indecision could lead her to trouble. And indecision in respect to how she handles a mismanagement situation could have disastrous professional and personal consequences. So the consultation would be key in more accurately determining her mental state.
Consultation
In addition to taking personal notes, I also recorded our session for accuracy.
[Lydia:] "Congratulations on your victory, Miss Hattori."
[Yoshi:] "Doctor can call me Yoshi!"
[Lydia:] "And you may call me Lydia."
Yoshi smiles and waves at me.
[Yoshi:] "My arm a little sore, do you have any ice?"
[Lydia:] "Of course, Yoshi."
I comply with some ice and a washcloth which Yoshi receives with a smile, almost as if I wasn't the one to cause the soreness.
[Yoshi:] "Thanks!"
[Lydia:] "If you need more time to rest up before the session, you can have it. While I prefer to speak with my opponents right after I face them, I am always sensitive to medical and health needs."
[Yoshi:] "I will be ok, let's talk now or else Matsuki find way to shut me up."
Bingo. This is exactly why I wanted to speak to her right away. I am surprised that she opened up to me so quickly though.
As much as I hate to say it, perhaps it was her openness and trustworthiness that allowed Matsuki to initially trick her into signing. I can't imagine Yoshi would have done so already knowing how bad Matsuki would treat her.
[Lydia:] "In what way, Yoshi?"
[Yoshi:] "She make me no cooperate with you or Coach, not say what I really feel, just what she wants people to hear."
[Lydia:] "What happens if you don't say, or do, what she wants?"
[Yoshi:] "She get Narai to threaten me, rough up during practice training."
[Lydia:] "That's horrible, Yoshi. And Matsuki has done that ever since she became your manager?"
[Yoshi:] "...yes."
[Lydia:] "When I looked at tapes of your earlier Elimininja career *Yoshi's face lights up at hearing this* I noticed how talkative you were. You always chatted with your fellow contestants and especially with the fans. But in OG-Joshi you are a lot quieter."
[Yoshi:] "I love my fans and respect my opponents but Matsuki no like me talking. She wants her words to be official message of Matsuki Investments group, not mine or even Narai's. She tell me to 'stay on message or shut up.'"
[Lydia:] "But you'd like to talk to your fans more?"
[Yoshi:] "Very much more! When I was Eliminja, I did fan signings every week. Now I'm not allowed to even look at them. If i look or talk, Matsuki says I not concentrated on match and winning."
Time for a slight digression that had been on my mind.
[Lydia:] "Speaking of "winning", you and Winning Yamasaki recently lost the ESTRELLA Tag Team Championships. How do you feel about that?"
Yoshi nods but seems nowhere near as stressed about this as she did when talking about her manager.
[Yoshi:] "We'll get another shot! It is an honor competing there and also being first Champions. We can't win every match but we doing the best we can."
[Lydia:] "Why is it that Miss Matsuki isn't around there?"
[Yoshi:] "Her contract doesn't extend across time travel to Super Nova!"
I'm going to have to seriously look into what she just said. Of course, it could just be an understandable effect of being hit in the head by one of my Roaringschach elbows. Perhaps I should tone those down.
[Lydia:] "And you seem to be enjoying yourself more there when not under the management of Miss Matsuki."
Yoshi is silent and squirms a bit.
[Lydia:] "You know, Yoshi. Coach and I can help you."
Yoshi looks hopeful but then a bit sad.
[Yoshi:] "But...I have contract."
[Lydia:] "I am a medical professional. If we can establish Matsuki's harassing treatment of you is having severe enough effects on your health, we can get the contract broken. Especially if we can establish that Narai Kaeo is physically abusing you."
[Yoshi:] "But...they'll come after me."
Yoshi is looking very worried now, even glancing back at the door.
[Lydia:] "I think you already have a few friends who can help protect you. Like Natalia Nogaard, and Coach herself. And I can help anyway I can. Plus, I am not sure you need protecting. You defeated Natalia who also defeated Narai. The way I see it, you are a better wrestler then Narai."
Yoshi smiles in the most humble way I've ever seen.
[Yoshi:] "Most thank you but it is not always about skill. Narai has hurt many wrestlers already, even those better then her."
[Lydia:] "Which is all the more reason to get as much distance from her as possible. Yoshi, I don't usually tell my patients on the first session my assessment of them but it is clear you are psychologically stable. But that does not mean you will stay that way if you allow Matsuki to continue to bully you. This is a situation you must get out of immediately."
[Yoshi:] "I have match with both Narai and Natalia at Voltage after next. What do I do?"
[Lydia:] "What is your heart telling you?"
At that moment, the door is kicked open by Narai Kaeo. Asako Matsuki takes Yoshi by the arm and drags her out.
[Lydia:] "We've already been through this-"
[Asako:] "No, we through this now. No more corrupting Hattori and messing with Matsuki contracts. You talk to her again and I sue you and OG-Joshi. And you don't want that one bit."
[Narai:] "I do worse."
[Lydia:] "Don't make me call security."
Narai smiles
[Narai:] "It would be too late."
Narai approaches but luckily my colleague Dr. Holt came in when he heard the commotion. Together we got Narai to back off. Unfortunately, Miss Matsuki escorted Yoshi away and the session ended with her mouthing 'thank you' to me.
Conclusion:
I am immediately recommending to Coach Carter that something be done to help Yoshi get out of her contract with Miss Matsuki. There is clearly nothing wrong with Yoshi's natural psychological state. In fact, I'd say its one of the healthiest out of any of the patients I've ever met. She's a delightful, upbeat, and confident person. But that is all immediately and intentionally negated when her manager is nearby. And even naturally upbeat people like Yoshi can wither under the smothering negative influence of Matsuki. I am worried for Yoshi's long term mental and physical health and will vouch for her in any court to get her contract broken.
This is a heartbreaking situation but I am now satisfied that my presence may provide some actual benefit in OG-Joshi.
1The entire 'Elimininja' phenomenon deserves to be studied very closely. I may make it my next case study if OG-Joshi ends up going out of business soon due to its owner's absence, World Title theft, and general violence in the air.
